by good works we mean not the superstitious works of men’s own invention, which be not commanded by God, nor approved by his word, in which kind of works many Christian men, and especially of them that were lately called religious, (as monks, friars, nuns, and such other,) have in times past put their great trust and confidence.7

After some months of uncertainty, from the end of 1537, government began to put pressure on religious houses to surrender voluntarily, both those which had been reprieved in 1536 and the large abbeys which had then been described as houses where “thanks be to God, religion is right well kept and observed”.8 Waltham Abbey, the last to surrender, went down in April 1540. With no houses left to move to, the religious were pensioned off. Over time, many of the monks secured appointment to a parish living. Nuns came off badly – both financially and because they were not allowed to marry; at least one group continued to live communally. The four orders of friars were also suppressed along with the Order of St John of Jerusalem, while hospitals followed in 1545. All that was salvaged from the wreck were six abbeys which were refounded as cathedrals.
